During the Tomb-Sweeping Day holiday in 2026, domestic travel in China soared to an impressive 135 million trips. Over the course of the three-day holiday, the national culture and tourism market operated in a safe and efficient manner. According to the data center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, there was a 6.8% increase in domestic tourist trips compared to the previous year, with total domestic travel expenditure reaching 61.367 billion yuan, a growth of 6.6%.
This holiday was not only about travel; it also marked a time for paying tribute. People honored their ancestors and remembered heroes, showcasing their national sentiments. Martyrs' cemeteries, memorial venues, and red tourism sites saw a significant increase in visitors. Many public activities included offering flower baskets and observing moments of silence in respect of those honored. Innovative practices emerged as various regions promoted "cloud memorials" and "online flower offerings," reflecting a modern approach to commemoration.
Additionally, many areas intertwined remembrance with patriotic education, holding red-themed activities in locales such as Guyuan in Ningxia, Jian in Jiangxi, and Zunyi in Guizhou. These events aimed to reinforce a sense of national belonging among citizens.
The holiday also highlighted the integration of flower viewing and spring outings with cultural and tourism consumption, driving a shift towards experiential economic development. Cities focused on creating high-quality tourism spaces, including garden cities and suburban parks, to broaden consumption experiences.
Notable events included the Wudadao Begonia Festival in Tianjin, over 200 spring cultural tourism activities in Chongqing, and 159 public benefit initiatives in Shaanxi. These activities promoted floral tourism while also encouraging the development of traditional culture, night tours, and creative industries.
Moreover, the holiday saw an array of concerts and music festivals, which stimulated cultural tourism consumption in nearby areas. The nighttime cultural and tourism economy experienced substantial growth as national-level nighttime cultural and tourism hubs attracted a total foot traffic of 45.4854 million visits.
