Construction has commenced in Shanghai on a deep-sea floating research facility, marking a significant addition to China's scientific research infrastructure capabilities. This facility is designed to enhance research within the domains of marine equipment, ocean resources, and marine science.

Developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the facility is slated for completion by 2030 and will consist of three core systems, which include a main platform, shipborne laboratories, and shore-based support.

The shipborne laboratories are set to focus on a wide array of topics, such as marine disasters, meteorological observations, and the physical environment of the underwater marine realm.

The platform will utilize a semi-submersible twin-hull vessel design, enabling it to conduct sea trials for larger-scale deep-sea equipment, weighing up to roughly 100 tonnes. This design will facilitate scientific exploration and experimental research at ocean depths that reach as far as 10,000 meters.

The facility is engineered to maintain a continuous presence in deep-sea mission locales year-round, allowing for sustained scientific observations and engineering trials. Its ability to be quickly mobilized and deployed offers flexibility in adjusting its operational sea zones.

Once fully operational, the facility will serve as a real-sea testing environment for deep-sea mining operations, crucial marine equipment, and offshore oil and gas technology, thus hastening the effective utilization of marine resources.

Furthermore, this facility is expected to unveil seasonal patterns related to the evolution of marine ecosystems and to explore significant questions surrounding the origins and evolution of life. It may also enhance the accuracy of typhoon forecasting and bolster disaster preparedness measures.
