Qinhuai Lantern Festival Shines Bright for Chinese New Year

The Qinhuai Lantern Festival in Nanjing is a vibrant celebration that marks its 40th anniversary this year, showcasing a stunning array of 400 lantern displays. Running from January 21 to May 31, the festival serves as a significant cultural event during the Chinese New Year.

Today coincides with the Lantern Festival, which carries a rich tradition of illuminating the night sky with colorful lantern displays. This time-honored practice is not only a feast for the eyes but also a means of connecting communities.

In its four-decade journey, the Qinhuai Lantern Festival has transformed Nanjing, a historic city in Jiangsu Province, into a dazzling spectacle. This year, the festival is divided into eight themed zones, including the renowned Confucius Temple, Laomendong historical district, and Bailuzhou Park.

Attendees will be treated to nearly 400 intricate lantern installations that creatively merge elements of folklore, history, and contemporary design. Each display tells a story and reflects the cultural richness of the region, inviting visitors from across the country and beyond.

The festival, rooted in the Eastern Wu period from 222 to 280 AD, not only preserves centuries-old customs but also seeks to elevate its profile on the global stage. This commitment to cultural exchange is further demonstrated by the inclusion of selected lantern displays in Le Barcarès, France.
