Ancient Salt and Sheep Route Revived with New Vitality

The ancient 'Salt-and-Sheep Route' is experiencing a revival as salt processing facilities and cultural tourism breathe new life into the local community. Historically, the region saw over 50 salt caravans operating more than a thousand years ago. Herders transported natural salt using their sheep, navigating routes that led them to Purang, Shigatse, and even extending into India and Nepal. This exchange facilitated barter for essential goods such as highland barley, tea bricks, and cloth, contributing to the lore of the legendary 'Salt-and-Sheep Route'.

In contemporary times, efforts to rejuvenate this ancient pathway are taking shape through the establishment of coarse salt processing facilities. This initiative aims not only at economic revitalization but also at re-establishing cultural links that have persisted through the ages.
