Northeast China beckons travelers with its snowy landscapes and warm hospitality. A South African, recently relocated to China, embarks on a journey to explore this region, experiencing the beauty of winter and the vibrant celebrations of Chinese New Year.

Embracing a nickname given by a friend, the traveler affectionately refers to himself as a 'potato', a term used for those from warmer climates eager to explore colder regions. Having spent much of his life in the coastal cities of Cape Town and Durban, snow has often been a distant image seen in movies, rather than a lived experience.

Since moving to China at the end of 2022, the traveler has focused on exploring areas beyond Beijing. The allure of the Spring Festival, China’s largest cultural celebration, occurs during the winter months, stretching from January 21 to February 20. Despite witnessing snow in Beijing on occasion, the traveler found a true winter wonderland still elusive, prompting a desire for more immersive experiences.

Several factors fueled the decision to venture into Dongbei, or Northeast China. The traveler’s love for floral patterned clothing endemic to the region made wearing them in their cultural context particularly appealing. Coupled with a philosophy that encourages respect for seasonal changes, the journey is framed by a desire for genuine winter experiences and a commitment to enjoying local hot spring traditions, including the famed rough cloth baths known as 'cuo zao'.

During a visit to Shenyang in early February 2025, the traveler enjoyed recognition for his vibrant Dongbei floral pants from a local waitress. Wearing each garment on a separate day has helped alleviate concerns about cultural appropriation, highlighting a delightful aspect of the 'Becoming Chinese' trend, which encourages cultural sharing.

Arriving in Shenyang by high-speed train, the traveler witnessed the stark transformation from Beijing’s dry landscape to a snowy wonderland. With the city's sidewalks blanketed in snow, the arrival fulfilled his longing for a winter escape.

Initially feeling under the weather, the traveler spent the first few days of the trip primarily indoors, missing out on the region's famed snow activities. However, the desire to relax in an outdoor hot spring surrounded by snow remained a top priority.

At a hot spring resort near Shenyang, the traveler encountered a young worker who facilitated his quest for an outdoor soaking experience. Although language barriers arose, the warm hospitality was evident as the staff made efforts to assist him in finding the outdoor springs.

Stepping into the steaming hot water amidst the frosty air provided the traveler with hours of comfort, contrasting beautifully with the winter chill. The relaxation reached its peak as darkness fell and fireworks illuminated the sky, signaling the festive spirit of the Chinese New Year.

With more to explore in Dongbei, including ice sculptures and spa experiences, the traveler looks ahead to a journey to Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province. This adventure promises to build resilience against the harsher climates of Harbin, home to the renowned Ice and Snow World and myriad winter festivities.

Anticipation builds for the upcoming visit to Changchun, where the traveler hopes to indulge in another cuo zao scrub and witness the impressive landscapes of the Ice and Snow Festival. As the journey continues, the sight of a floral-clad foreigner enjoying Dongbei's hospitality may soon become a common one.
