Chinese Airlines Extend Refund and Cancellation Policies
Highlights
China's largest airlines extend free refunds and rebooking for Japan flights, valid for tickets purchased before Dec 5, 2025.
China's major airlines have announced an extension of free refunds and rebooking options for flights to Japan, which will be applicable for tickets bought before December 5, 2025. This decision comes in the wake of rising tensions and related disruptions in air travel.
The current situation stems from remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concerning Taiwan. This incident has been dubbed the "Takaichi Fallout," leading to a significant halt in air traffic. Consequently, nearly 500,000 flight reservations between China and Japan have been canceled.
In light of the ongoing disruptions, leading carriers such as Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines, alongside other airlines, have amended their policies to accommodate affected travelers. The new guidelines allow for easy cancellations and rebookings.
The updated policy covers tickets that were either purchased or reissued before noon on December 5, 2025. This measure is designed to assist travelers facing uncertainties due to evolving circumstances.
Travelers can utilize this flexible policy for flights scheduled between November 15, 2025, and March 28, 2026. Such measures are critical to alleviating inconveniences as the situation develops.
The ongoing crisis underscores the extensive economic and social repercussions resulting from prevailing diplomatic strains. Significant disruptions to tourism and cultural exchanges have been observed.
Moreover, these developments evoke what is being referred to as the considerable "Takaichi cost," highlighting the potential long-term impacts on travel and business relations between China and Japan.
