The Maldives has enacted a groundbreaking smoking ban effective from November 1, 2023, prohibiting individuals born after January 1, 2007, from smoking tobacco, thereby establishing itself as the only nation with such a generational tobacco prohibition.

This initiative, spearheaded by President Mohamed Muizzu earlier this year, aims to protect public health and foster a tobacco-free generation, as articulated by the nation's Health Ministry.

Under this new legislation, those born on or after the specified date are barred from purchasing, using, or being sold any tobacco products within the Maldives.

The ban encompasses all forms of tobacco, with retailers mandated to verify the age of customers prior to completing any sales.

Importantly, this measure extends to visitors to the Maldives, comprised of 1,191 coral islets located roughly 800 kilometers along the equator, known for its luxury tourism.

Additionally, the Health Ministry maintains a comprehensive ban on the importation, sale, distribution, possession, and usage of electronic cigarettes and vaping products, applicable to all individuals regardless of age.

Penalties for violating these regulations are significant, with fines of 50,000 rufiyaa, approximately 3,200 USD, for selling tobacco products to minors, and 5,000 rufiyaa, or around 320 USD, for using vape devices.

While the Maldives takes this progressive step, similar generational bans are currently under discussion in other regions, including the United Kingdom, where legislative processes are ongoing.

Notably, New Zealand was the first country to attempt such a law but repealed it in November 2023, only months after its introduction, highlighting the complexities of implementing tobacco control measures.
