Explore Scenic Yichang Where Icons Live On

Yichang, located in the scenic Hubei province of China, serves as the gateway to the breathtaking Three Gorges. This vibrant city is not only known for its picturesque landscapes but also for its rich cultural heritage, prominently showcased during the Duanwu Festival, which features traditional dragon boat races.

Yichang is home to some of the country's most significant water control projects, including the Gezhouba Dam and the famous Three Gorges Dam. Both of these engineering marvels are popular tourist destinations that are best enjoyed through scenic cruises along the Yangtze River.

In addition to its modern attractions, Yichang is the birthplace of two celebrated historical figures from ancient China. Qu Yuan, a revered poet from the State of Chu during the Warring States Period, and Wang Zhaojun, one of China's 'four beauties', hail from the nearby counties of Zigui and Xingshan, respectively.

The poignant story of Qu Yuan, who is said to have taken his own life in the Miluo River after hearing of his homeland's defeat, is commemorated each year on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

This day has evolved into the Duanwu Festival, commonly known as the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated with enthusiasm across the region.

Zigui county takes the lead in organizing elaborate dragon boat races combined with a range of colorful cultural events, allowing locals and visitors alike to partake in the rich traditions associated with the festival.

During this festive time, people indulge in zongzi, which are glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, a traditional culinary delight that holds cultural significance.

The Qu Yuan Temple, originally constructed during the Tang Dynasty, has witnessed several reconstructions and relocations due to the development of the Three Gorges Dam, further illustrating Yichang's evolving cultural landscape.
