The ecological restoration efforts on the Xisha Islands have led to a significant increase in green turtle nesting sites, highlighting a successful conservation initiative in China. As temperatures rise, the waters around the Xisha Islands, part of Sansha City in Hainan Province, have now entered the peak breeding season for these remarkable creatures.

Last week, environmental staff on the island reef reported the discovery of two new green turtle nesting sites on Yongxing Island. This marks a historic event as it is the first recorded nesting on the island in recent years, underscoring the positive impact of ongoing conservation work.

Green turtles are classified as a first-class protected species in China. Among the world's seven existing sea turtle species, five are known to inhabit Chinese waters. The Xisha Islands stand out as the largest green turtle nesting grounds in the country.

Monitoring efforts spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs have revealed a notable rise in the number of green turtles coming ashore to nest on the Xisha Islands over recent years. This trend showcases the effectiveness of restoration activities in benefiting local wildlife.

As of July 6, 81 sea turtle nests have been documented in the monitored zones of the Xisha waters this year. This figure represents a 30 nest increase compared to the same period last year, signaling a promising upward trend in nesting activities.

The initial nesting activities recorded this year on both Yongxing Island and Zhaoshu Island further indicate improvements in ecological conditions. These developments suggest that the habitats for sea turtles in the area are gradually expanding, providing better environments for these endangered species.
