On May 28, the 9th Chengdu International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival was inaugurated in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. This event was co-hosted by the Sichuan Provincial Government, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, UNESCO, and the National Committee of China for UNESCO. Notable attendees at the opening ceremony included Rao Quan, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism and Director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration; Shi Xiaolin, Governor of Sichuan Province; Hu Yun, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province; Wang Fengchao, Mayor of Chengdu; and Wang Xiaofeng, President of the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Association.
With the theme "Enhancing Communication and Mutual Learning, Inspiring the Vitality of Heritage, and Sharing a Beautiful Life," this year’s festival introduced an innovative format of "Guest Country + Guest City". It features three main segments: "Vibrant Heritage: Tianfu Parade," "Colorful Heritage: Dialogue of Inheritance," and "Charming Heritage: International Exhibition." Additionally, there are three special sections highlighting "Creative Life" with international rights trading for intangible heritage brands, a "Beautiful Life" International Intangible Heritage Food Week, and a "Healthy Life" Traditional Medicine Promotion Week.
The festival brings together over 600 intangible cultural heritage projects from more than 60 countries and regions, with around 400 domestic representatives of intangible heritage participating in showcases and sales. This year’s festival emphasizes the integration of intangible cultural heritage into modern life, highlighting the concept of "Heritage of the People, Shared by the People," while showcasing China's systematic experience in heritage protection and the youthful strength of inheritance that contributes to economic and social development.
The festival will run until June 3. Additionally, during the Dragon Boat Festival, Chengdu will host cultural activities including dragon boat races, cultural performances, and displays of traditional craftsmanship, providing a rich feast of intangible heritage for the citizens and visitors.
